IPP releases its fifth ‘Policy Paper’: Internal devaluation and unemployment: the case of Portugal, by António Bob Santos and Sofia Fernandes.

This paper discusses the impacts of the internal devaluation strategy pursued in the context of the adjustment programme and argues that this strategy relied on a misunderstanding of the structural weaknesses of the Portuguese economy.
This paper, completed in May 2015, will also appear as a chapter in the forthcoming book ‘Unemployment, Internal devaluation and Labour Market deregulation in Europe’, edited by Myant Martin, Theodoropoulou Sotiria and Agnieszka Piasna. The book is expected in early 2016 and the research for it was supported by the European Trade Union Institute.
