JOB OPPORTUNITY – Research assistant

The Institute of Public Policy – Lisbon (IPP) is a think tank of academic origin, which acts in a nonpartisan manner, being independent of any economic, social, political, religious or other interests. We intend to promote a society in which the public debate is more enlightened and the political decision processes more rigorous and informed.

Our mission is to contribute to the continuous improvement of the analysis and public debate of institutions and public policies with particular emphasis on Portugal and Europe, through the creation and dissemination of relevant research. IPP is a multi-disciplinary think tank that seeks to combine economic analysis with political science by developing our work in key areas of research and debate.

Main function

Provide research assistance and support to an ongoing project on the construction of a microsimulation model of taxes and benefits in Portugal to evaluate the budgetary and redistributive consequences of changes in the tax-benefit system.

Desired profile

  • The candidate must hold a MSc in Economics, Statistics or Computational Science.
  • Strong working knowledge of the statistical package STATA is required.
  • Preference given to people with previous experience dealing with survey data, namely the Portuguese version of the survey on income and living conditions.
  • Previous experience working in an academic/non-profit institution and taking part in the development of projects under research grants is also well regarded.
  • Proficiency in both English and Portuguese is crucial.
  • Desired soft skills: team spirit; strong work ethic; demonstrated ability to work autonomously, with tight deadlines and changing workloads.

Terms and conditions

The available position refers to a 6-months full-time internship (hybrid and with flexible working schedule). Salary will be paid according to the FCT research scholarship scale.

The selected candidate should be available to begin working as soon as the recruitment is completed – beginning of May 2023.
