The favorable result for Brexit in the referendum held in the United Kingdom on June 23, 2016, surprised Europe and profoundly shaken Europeanism. The public reactions that followed from the various political leaders have shown that the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union not only significantly wounds the European integration project, but also calls into question the unity of the United Kingdom itself, due to the marked geographical contrasts of voting.
The contours of the entire exit process, which may drag on for a few years, are now anything but clear. This is a political issue that will necessarily be in constant development over the next few weeks.
Given the central importance of this theme for the European Union and for Portugal in the political and economic dimensions, we gather here the opinion of two members of the Institute of Public Policy’s board on the subject. The opinions expressed only bind the authors.
